Monday night around 10:30pm, a problem with the memory on the database server was encountered. This caused all Blackboard connections to the database to close, rendering Blackboard unavailable at this time. A restart of the database was required, and Blackboard was restored to full operation by 12 midnight.

The exact nature of the problem is still not known, and we are actively working with Oracle to determine what went wrong and ensure it does not happen again.

Did it get fixed? I’ve messed with those DB problems before and know that they can take a while to get the kinks out of ‘em.

So far so good. Support at Sun and Oracle agree that we just edged over a memory threshold and began paging memory, which is very slow and results in a broken Blackboard experience. Two changes were made which should eliminate the possibility of this memory problem happening again.

To adjust the text size of your browser:

In Internet Explorer: Click the View menu and scroll down to “Text Size” and select the option of your choice. Normal text size is “Medium”.

In Netscape/Mozilla Navigator: Hold down the Ctrl key and press “+” or “-” to make the text size larger or smaller, respectively.
