I continue to experience slower response times than a year ago today. I called the HELP desk and was told it is the start of the term that makes it so. I have cut way back on my use of BlackBoard discussion board because of the time factor. It is 3-4 times longer each click than it was a year ago. The net result is to back off and use the tools less..but this gives students less interaction. I suppose soon no one will remember that there once was better interaction. Like anything else the past has a certain glow, but before we forget…I was averaging 120 interactions per week with students in fall 2006. Now I am down to 50 in the same size class. And the reason is simply time and the less intuitive nature of the system.
Just as classes f2f can be made bigger by adding seats and eventually no one will remember that there was a student-teacher ration that allowed more interaction, so it is with BB Eventually we accept less but we remember when we were able to interact more.
Anything you can do to return us to the functionality of the past would be appreciated.

We are preparing a proposal that would allow us to grow the Blackboard infrastructure to maintain acceptable performance during peak times. However, as even a brief loss of the Blackboard service is extremely serious, there is hardly any appropriate time within the academic calendar available for system maintenance. Consequently, as one of the challenges we face is the requirement to bring the system down in order to mend the current situation, we need to determine a maintenance window acceptable to all parties.
We remain committed to supporting our academic community by providing as robust and reliable environments as possible.

Just wait a few days…BB will crash and then you’ll be able to “FIX” the system.
