After way too many years, we finally have a mechanism that allows Blackboard Instructors to view the course as a true student. Simply called “Create Temporary Student”, this tool creates a student account based on your own NetID and password and enrolls them into your Blackboard course.

Use the new temporary student feature in Blackboard to

  • See your students’ view of your courses in Blackboard,
  • Check that all of your course content is accessible to students and displays as you intend it to,
  • Ensure that all assignments and associated points are in the Gradebook,
  • Improve your students’ online learning experience by identifying any issues before the course is delivered.

Here’s the how to get started using Temporary Student

1. Log into Blackboard and go into a course in which you are an instructor.

2. In the Control Panel, go to Manage Tools, then click on Manage Building Block Tools.

3. Find the item Create Temporary Student, check it’s box, scroll down and Submit.

4. Go back to your Control Panel. You should now see an item in the Course Tools panel called Create Temporary Student. Click this.

The temporary student is almost ready for use. Follow the onscreen instructors for logging out of Blackboard and back in as your new student account.

This is not a dream come true. It is more clunky Blackboard BS. Creating the temp student takes several steps, and then the temp student only lasts for a day! I have to log off and then log back on with a new temporary name and password? You’ve got to be kidding me! Why can’t there be a simple button for “student view” that will show us what our students see?

And while we’re at it, what’s the deal with the lack of up-to-date student rosters? Students stay enrolled on Blackboard even after they drop the class. AND there’s no easy way to print out a new roster. The Registrar has decided not to give us direct access to our rosters through OASIS because, they say, we have Blackboard to provide that information. Why are we relying so heavily on this software that isn’t user friendly and that doesn’t give us what we want quickly and easily?

thanks for this. since one needs to logout of temp student and then log back in to blackboard, it would be helpful to have a “log back in” option at page confirming logout.

    HI Glenn -

I spoke with a guy at the Blackboard booth at Educause conference in Orlando and he recommended me to speak with you.

A professor was doing a survey on the campus and after the fact, he wanted to be able to aggregate the data which is not possible with results that I got. I submitted a ticket with Blackboard to see if I can get raw data but their responses were not exactly helpful. Is it possible for me to pull the data out from the survey into a raw data? I know there is an issue with anonymous but I can remove the name field and gave it to the professor who did the survey.

I tried to do a search on your blog for this kind of question but couldn’t find anything.

Hope you would be able to help?

    Thanks

    Shannon
