Internet Explorer 8 is now generally available, but problems still persist.
In order to use IE8 with Blackboard, you will need to change the compatibility mode of IE8 to emulate IE7
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/features/enhanced-navigation.aspx
It’s still in beta, so it should come as no surprise to anyone who uses it, but there are known problems with IE8 Beta and Blackboard.
The following are known issues with IE 8 Beta
- Students trying to upload files to an Assignment will receive an error message
“Please submit a valid file” - When taking a timed quiz, the yellow timer which normally sits in the upper-right corner of the screen, instead rests in the lower-right corner, covering up the next/previous question buttons. Students are unable to advance to the next questions.
The only current workaround is to use a supported web browser, IE7, Firefox 2 or 3, or Safari 3.
Similarly, Google’s awesome new web browser Chrome is not supported, and there are currently no published plans by Blackboard to do so.
Here is Blackboard official support matrix for web browsers. (updated Oct 27, 2008)

Its not that hard to switch back to IE7. IE8 beta has also what is called developer tools (F12). Hit F12 and at the top will show you what browser mode your in and view along with other things. Just click on browser mode to switch it to IE7 and it should allow your current session to work. There is a way to switch from IE8 as the default to IE7, haven’t ffigured it out yet.

I dont know if I would call Chrome “awesome” … its still needs quite a few improvements.

Google Chrome is MUCH faster than any existing browser and its still in BETA.
That is saying ALOT. I am actively using Chrome for Blackboard and WebAssign and it has less hangups, freezes, etc. than any existing mainstream browser.
Before condemning it outright keep in mind that it is still in the beta stage and puts the rest to shame.
So the adjective “Awesome” is totally applicable.

I’m using G-Chrome and It works fine, it most cases. As for using it to apply for student loans, I’m out of luck- and used a less secure browser.

I was using Opera most of Spring ‘09; it worked out fine. I’m back on Firefox, now but it wasn’t because of problems with Blackboard. You know… there really is just no excuse for compatibility issues like this, other than laziness and/or stinginess on the behalf of the webmaster.

I’ve never liked IE. its so very buggy and slow. Chrome is fast, optimized and great but the fact that its new worries me for possible exploits and zero-day attacks. I’ve been comfortably using Firefox for quite a while enjoying its support for multiple add-ons.
